APL - is it alive?
A Programming Language (APL) appeared in 1964 by Kenneth E. Iverson. It is an array based programming language with it's notation heavily influenced by mathematics. It has a rich set operations that operate on whole arrays with data. You can read more about it at Wikipedia.
Now, my question is simply: Is APL alive or is it dead?
I have recently worked on a project where APL have been used historically on a relatively advanced set of algorithms. Since very few of the project members could interpret the syntax it has become important to translate the existing APL source code to some other language. Preferably C++ if you ask me in the current point in time.
According to Wikipedia (and I should mention that that is about the only research I have done so far), there seem to be some APL activity out there. There is even one dialect that interoperates with Microsoft .NET. So, to call it completely dead would perhaps be wrong. Perhaps half dead is a better way to describe it. I had never heard of APL before the project I mentioned above, so I that believe the language is not that very well spread.
Future use of APL remains to be seen.
